The underlying fantasy of the show is that nerds can win THE babe. When I’d be with my former college roommate over dinner, we’d talk fast without a lot of pauses about video games, the newest Windows software, the ethics of salesmanship, building one’s own telescope using hardware supplies, and the like. The few people I know with supermodel looks just can’t keep up.

It therefore requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief for me when I watch this show, and what brings me back for more is the geeky, nerdy way the characters talk (being a former technician/engineer person myself), and the uncertainties between the leading characters.

The nerd herd (Chuck included) thoroughly gets the twisted way nerds use language and logic to come up with crude ridiculous yet “reasonable” assertions. For nerds, this kind of talk is sort of like a contact sport with only one rule – when in doubt, assert. And then follow up that assertion with a ridiculous, yet logical conclusion (like that assertion that anything between 2 slices of bread is a sandwich, and the corresponding conclusion is that a Jessica Alba sandwich would be nice to have in the tropics).

On the dramatic side, Chuck talks too fast and way too much (as nerds typically do), and Sarah, in contrast, leaves so many things unsaid. Chuck is generally truthful about what he says, and Sarah, again in contrast (in my opinion, anyway), feels compelled to lie once in a while. This is just about the most dramatic a nerd can get (“General Hospital” is torture for people like me).

It is these human dimensions to the story that gives purpose to the action on the screen, and makes you root for a positive outcome for the protagonists. Looming ahead in Chuck’s character development is his eventual loss of innocence, and how Sarah will react to that. That’s what I’m getting in this interview, and I look forward to how it will unfold in the next season.

So, cheers to Chuck and the new season! And three cheers to Sarah (as played by Ms. Strahovsky) who always manages to look absolutely perfect in terms of makeup, curled hair, and fashion sense in every episode! As an aside, it’ll be a funny episode when Sarah gets to have a bad hair day, which I think will never happen (unless the bad guys torture her with a curling iron or something). If this post makes me sound like a fanboy, pardon me – it’s the nerd in me talking.
